When I Was Puerto Rican Post 1

"I wrapped my legs around her and buried my face under her chin. It felt good to have Mami so close,  so warm, swathed by her softness, her smell of wood smoke and oregano."
I really like this line in the book for a few various reasons. First off the description of this line is just perfect. It gives you a nice description of feelings and smells which you can easily imagine in your head when reading this part. If you can just remember those feelings and smells and close your eyes and think about them its easy to see why the girl is overwhelmed with love. I feel like this line is just really well written because the author can make you experience the things a character is. That aspect is one of my favorite things about books and its why I really enjoy descriptive sic fi as you can be in the future if the author is good enough. I also really like this line because it really speaks to everyone with a mom. Like that feeling of being totally swathed in your mothers arms and scent when your little is something no one could ever forget. When I was reading it, it made me remember some of those days when I was a little boy and would scrap my knee or get hurt or something and go running into my mothers arms crying and then everything would melt away, Its a sensation like no other. This type of super descriptive writing in general can never be "bad" to me because it literally always takes you somewhere. Where that is you'll never know till you read more.Another reason this line is perfect in relation to the book is that the girl is always afraid of her mothers punishment but then this also shows that no matter how harsh moms are they are always only all love.

  1. It’s nice that you wrote multiple reasons why you liked that quote, and not just one. You described them by using great imagery and appealing to the five senses. I also like how you connected the quote to your own life at the end of your post. What you said at the end was very true, that mother’s will always be there for you.

  2. I think you did a really nice job. I loved the fact that you showed all the ways you enjoyed the quote and how they felt to you. You definitely applied your five senses to each way you liked the quote. I can definitely related to the comfort of your mothers arms when you hurt or just need a shoulder to cry on. Again, you did a terrific job.

  3. While I think that in most cases mothers will always love their children I don’t think it’s always true. Some mothers have kids by accident or are forced to have them and might resent their children. It also seems like if a mother “loves” her kids but abuses them physically or verbally that’s not really love. I think if you really love your children you would try to keep their best interests at heart even if you’re not perfect.

  4. I see that many aspects has been added to this passage/blog and all really bring good points. I see that the mother can resent their children at times but at one point they will love their children. You added multiple reasons to the quote giving multiple perspectives to how your mother was to the reader making connections with book the book AND to you. You chose a quote everyone can tell what is going on and how the descriptions help you tell one thing from another giving you visual/mental pleasure.

  6. This sentence from your memoir was very descriptive and it gave me a good illustration in my head. I also love the point you made about how a mother will always love her child, in any situation. That just said a bit to me. I like how you made the point of how descriptive it was and I think you chose a great sentence to back up that statement.I like how you backed up all of your statements in general. This seems like a very interesting memoir so far.
