"I'm dead. You want me to talk about my family and here I been dead to them for fifty years. Leave me alone. Don't bother me. They want no parts of me and me I don;t want no parts of them."
This quote was at the very beginning of the book and it has been replaying in my mind over and over again. The author's mother said this when he was interviewing her. I love how a few words have so much emotion in it and have so many different meanings. What I love about it is the way she worded how she felt about her family with just a few little words.
Its's kind of interesting how she didn't use a lot of descriptive words but you still were able to understand what she was saying and where she came from. the way she said she was dead to her family was straight forward and didn't really leave room for readers to figure it out on her own.
Overall, I love the way the authors mother is honest and straight forward.
I like how you explained that it didn't take a lot of words or description to get the authors feelings across. I wrote my last entry about 6 word memoirs which are practically the same thing as you described. You use as many words as it takes to prove your point and that is all you need. I totally agree with your statement that you don't need a lot of words and description to make a point or produce emotion.

I think it acts as a really good hook for the reader because it leaves the reader wondering what the author has gone through to get to that point in her life. I also agree that it doesn't take a lot of words to get a point across, if fact some times its good to not even make a full point to kind of allow the reader room for interpretation.
ReplyDeleteI really like that quote because it shows independence and emotion. I also think it is strong and I agree that the way the author writes it is very straight forward. I think this says a lot about the authors mother and her personality. This can also definitely relate to dialect(how its written).
