Into Thin Air Blog #2

My favorite character in my book is Rob Hall. Jon Krakauer makes it feel as if he is the best character in the book from the way he describes him. I like Hall because he helps other people even if he does not want to or have to help them. Krakauer describes Hall as if he is the nicest person in the book. Hall has helped other people in life and death situations even if he does not have to do it and will put his life on the line to help.

"The Sherpas we've hired are the best in the business, they work incredibly hard for not very much pay by Western standards. I want you all to remember we would have absolutely no chance of getting to the summit of Everest without their help. I'm going to repeat that: Without the support of our Sherpas none of us has any chance of climbing the mountain."

Rob Hall is speaking to his climbing crew about how he has to travel to base camp alone before the rest of the crew can because one of the Sherpas has fallen 150 feet from a cliff on Everest and needs help getting off the mountain. Hall is going to help this Sherpa even though he does not have to because he respects all the Sherpas for everything they do for them. Hall also gave advice to other climbers that are not in his crew because he does not want to see anyone die on Everest. In numerous occasions Hall has helped other people more than anyone else in the book. This proves how Rob Hall will do anything to help other people even if it is not for his on benefit but for other peoples benefit.

  1. How do you think the author makes Rob Hall so likeable? Besides this quote, what else does the author choose to include about his friend that gets the reader to just love him?

  2. I like the way you reflect on characters and look at the ways the author starts them off and then develops them into very likeable characters throughout the book, the way you see the individuals and have pity for people you have never met shows alot of progress in the authors character development.
