So pretty early on in the book, the author was out with her mother. She touched a hot metal wall and burned her fingers, earning the response of "That'll teach you. Never touch the wall on the sunny side" from her mother. I liked this line a lot because it reminds me of how I was as a little kid. My mom always tells me stories about how many times we went through situations similar to this, because I was the type of child that learned from their mistakes, rather than never making them. I think this was an important thing to add so early in the book, because it gives us readers an insight to the relationship between the author and her mother. Adding this line of dialog instead of just going straight into the part with her mother caring for her burn establishes the personality of her mother by showing that she isn't the type of parent that is going to let her child make these mistakes without any type of scolding, but at the same time isn't going to let her child go on without making sure she is okay. Adding this type of character detail is something I think is important to add in my memoir, especially about a character as important as a mother. The details about each character helps me relate the story to my life, which I think is an important part of memoirs like this as well. Each memoir has something special to teach, and its so much easier to learn that lesson when you can actually put yourself in the authors shoes and see yourself in that situation.

I agree with you that the quote is important because I think that it shows how the character’s parents raised her and their relationship with her. It seems the mom wants her daughter to understand and learn from her mistakes, but at the same time she is concerned for her safety and wants to make sure she knows that she is cared for. I think it’s important to note that the author didn’t just come out and say this, she showed the characteristics of her parents by telling stories about them where their character showed. This style of writing is something I think everyone should use when writing a story because it is more descriptive and interesting to read.
ReplyDeleteWell I believe you had a great supporting claim, of why you believe this quote is important to the book. I feel like i could relate to you and the book, because I too learn from my mistakes. Instead of never making them. I also think that you did a very good job at relating this quote to how it displays their relationship with each other.

ReplyDeleteyour blog was really good and i likes your use of imagery threw out the whole thing. you did a great job of showing what the authors mother is like. i think that it would be different if my mom was like that because she is kind of the opposite kind of parent. it is also very easy to put myself in the authors shoes just from reading the given text.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was a bit of foreshadowing? Illustrating more the point that this was how she was going to learn and grow instead of being protected.
ReplyDeleteIt could have a dual purpose. In addition, maybe it is an establishment of her character as a child, providing a pint from which she can grow and become more careful.
