This is for the "Your words become mine" prompt.
A quote from The Glass Castle that I especially love is "Dad was a dramatic story teller. He always started out slow, with lots of pauses."
Dad was a dramatic story teller. He always started out slow, with lots of pauses...
I was tucked into my small, cozy bed at the age of five. It was storming outside, and I could hear the pitter-patter of the rain against the bedroom window. My room was glowing with the light from my pink lamp. I had my head against my favorite pillow, gripping my new stuffed bunny with button eyes and glossy fur. My dad was sitting at the edge of the bed smiling and playing with my brown, wispy hair while telling one of his famous adventure stories about brave characters who went on dangerous expeditions.
I shifted in bed and waited excitedly as my dad got to my favorite part, as I had heard this one before, and I smiled when he put all of his emotion into it. He laughed and dramatically raised his voice while telling the important events, and he used his words to paint a picture of the story in my mind. I closed my eyes and imagined what my dad was telling, thinking about multiple things at a time. I giggled when I heard a funny part and was silent when there was a sad part.
My dad's low voice was ringing in my ears, and the rain was picking up with the occasional rumble of thunder. I stroked my bunny's fur and held my dad's hand. At that moment, I felt at peace.
As the story was coming to a close, my eyes were becoming heavy and fatigue swept over me. My dad finally closed the story with a dramatic "the end," and smiled at me. I begged him for another, but he refused, pulled my pink, fluffy blankets over me, and kissed me goodnight. He left the room, and I closed my eyes. I went to bed with the images of my dad's story in my mind, the sound of his deep voice, and the feeling of his hand holding mine.
This post has really good imagery! I could almost feel the words and the fluffy blanket that you describe. Every sentence is packed with detail from "glossy fur" to "wispy hair". I actually felt more drowsy after reading this. Good work!
