I really enjoyed the quote, "'You busted your snot locker pretty good.'" I feel like this quote shows how the author wrote her dad to have a sense of humor. In the book, the author really puts her dad in the perspective that even though they are going through harsh times from constantly moving around and looking for new jobs and housing, her dad tried to make the most of it. I love this quote because first off, the author's dad is referring a snot locker to a nose and second, just because its funny. In the book, her dad accidentally dropped the author out of the car and she had a bloody nose. Referring to the nose as a snot locker makes the serious scene funny or less hard to think someone would do. I feel as though the way the author speaks in the quote and the rest of the story is every serious moment that happened, she would put a hint of funny like the words "snot locker" to make it more relatable and to make it feel welcoming. This quote,to me, is like a way to a child's heart, making something that is hard to believe believable. So far reading this book had make me laugh and think and i cannot wait to read more!
I agree that the author always seems to make the best of a situation when she writes about a serious moment in her childhood, that may seem very traumatic to us. I like this writing style because the author is more so writing from the perspective she had as a child, when she saw everything as a new adventure and looked up to her parents (she and her dad even had a very special connection). Writing with the childlike innocence she had really helps put the reader into the story because it shows how the character really felt in that moment, as opposed to how she felt as an adult looking back on the moments (since she would probably see how her parents’ parenting skills weren’t the best).
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you in that the author writes in this way where she will include the slightest bit of humor in a really serious, or even sometimes depressing or obnoxiously crazy moment. She kind of uses dry humor, and she is also very straight-forward in her writing. Even if she is telling about crazy, preposterous events that happened, she'll just describe what happened, and she won't say something like "it was so crazy!!" It's kind of like she's reliving those moments she had as a child, and writing from a kid's perspective in a way.
