Blog #1: Reflections on Writing Memoirs
Writing a memoir, even if it is just about a short section of the author's life, seems like it is a long process.
Often times I have trouble remembering details of certain events in the past year, and when writers write a memoir, its often about something that happened over a year ago. Writers have to be very detailed to capture the full essence of the story and importance of what happened across to their readers. I would imagine that you would have to think hard about whatever you are writing about, sometimes you may remember most of what happened, but there might be one detail that you can't quite remember. Probably in a lot of cases, writers have to sort of fill in the blanks, twist the truth a bit according to what really happened, as long as their reader can understand and is captivated by the story.
When writing a memoir, authors will often write about something that happened in their childhood. Like writing other kinds of non-fiction books, you probably have to read/talk to a lot of different sources. Family members, friends, you might get the chance to reconnect with some people you used to know from when you were younger.
I wonder how long it actually takes to write a memoir. I'm sure for a full autobiography it takes a LONG time to write, but when you write a memoir, how much shorter or longer does it take than writing like a novel? I also wonder what prompts, or triggers writers to decide to write a memoir? Are a lot of people who have written memoirs, also authors of other books?
One of the things I am most worried about, kind of stressed about when it comes to writing my memoir, is first off, which part of my life should I write about? There hasn't been a super defining, or dramatic experience. I'm also worried about kind of HOW to write it. Like, what is the best way to space out each of the events, how do I transition from one thing to another, and how much specific detail should I include? I think when I'm writing my memoir I'll need to really analyze and figure out which parts are the most important to include, in terms of how much they define me, and how interesting and captivating they are for the reader.
These are my thoughts on writing a memoir. :)
