Bad Boy Blog #4

Summary Of Walter Dean Myers' Bad Boy

Overall, this memoir was very intriguing. Reading about Walter's life as a child and as he grew to become a young man gave me many opportunities to relate to. As a child, Walter and I were raised up in the church. We both were picked on by other kids because we were different. As Walter got older, his life choices were not all positive. He rarely attended school and his relationship with his parents was nearly broken. He started to get into shady activities with his friend Frank before Frank decided to leave for Philadelphia. After Frank left, Walter felt lost in the world because Frank was the only one that he could relate to and that could understand him. Walter decided to join the army to try and "find what he had lost" in the real world that he felt had let him down. While he was in the army, he learned how to actually fight to kill. He began to write again and some of his writing was published. He decided to write books for young children. His mother loved the idea and was very proud. His father on the other hand did not agree with it because he felt like it took Walter back to the days when he was a boy and he was a man now in his father's eyes. Reading Bad Boy has boosted my self-esteem To never give up or quit. Throughout your life you will come across challenges and people who don't want you to succeed. You have to have standards for yourself to let others know that you deserve respect. I would encourage anyone who is having self-esteem problems to read this book. This book will teach you that life is not easy and that if you want something out of life, you have to work for it. Nothing in the real world will be handed to you. Never stop trying to reach your goals.

  1. I ,at first, I thought that this writing will be slightly scattered and very confusing to understand, but I decided to give it a go. To me it was a good choice too. You connect your life with his on the aspects of him before he turned into the bad boy. You give a great summary of how he continued throughout the story to find his meaning when he does it's so heartwarming as I expect. I also love your overall theme/moral of the book to never give up and keep on going which at various times in life it is too difficult to remember that, so when you do it could end up changing everything or end up changing nothing . I think this was very well done and summarized to an easier understanding.
