Character Description
My favorite character is Walter, who is also the narrator. Throughout each chapter, Walter describes the challenges he faces in his everyday life living in Harlem. Walter deals with bullies and mean teachers everyday at his school. His first response is always violent, which is not the right approach. "I was also a reader. Not just a reader, but someone hungry for books". This is a wonderful example of character description. On the outside, Walter is looked upon as a bad boy from Harlem who only finds pleasure in fighting. In reality, Walter is an excellent reader with a gift for writing poetry. Because of his record of fighting, his teachers automatically assume that he's just another dumb student who can't learn anything. His classmates judge him because of the color of his skin instead of getting to know him as a person. Walter is not recognized as an intelligent student until his teacher Mr. Lasher places him in an advanced class. When he is placed with other students who are gifted just like him, his behavior improves and so does his grades. I think that it would be most interesting to write a description about my sister Olyvia. On the outside, she is very shy and quiet. She mostly keeps to herself and doesn't bother anyone. In reality, she is very talented when it comes to drawing. She has an amazing voice and is very good at playing piano. People look at her and think that she'll take anything that you give her. That's not even close to her true personality. She is a very loving person but has standards for herself and won't take any mess from anybody. Walter Dean Myers is a great author and loves to share his personal stories. So far, this memoir is very intriguing.
If I was Walter I probably would've proved to my teacher that was really smart and I probably would've changed the way that people and the way that my teachers by doing good and positive things to let them forget the bad things that I had done in the past. I love how Walter doesn't let his past define him though. As they say the past is in the past.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Remi. As these issues happens to him now he could go past it and try to do more positive things. Even the past thing can motivate him to do more in the future. Overall, your post is well put together and very descriptive to provide a visual image helping visualize your sister and Walter
ReplyDeleteHey Caylah! You make a strong connection between Walter's experience and that of your sister's. What are different ways that you can write about your sister that will convey to the reader what she is like?
